Chronology Study of Parts of the Book of Ezekiel   by Murrell Selden 4/10/14

Introduction

Ezekiel covers the period of Babylonish captivity of Jehoiachin from the beginning of the book to much later.  The book begins in his 30th year, and he is at the River Chebbar (or Kebar) in Tel Aviv, but under captivity.  Jehovah chooses him as his prophet.  The time is Tammuz 5 in the 5th year of captivity of Jehoiachin ( a weeping time per Zech. 8:19).  I am of the belief that the 1st year of his captivity was 607 B.C.E. in the 165h year of Nebuchadnezzar, so it appears to be the 8th year of Jehoiachin (as King).    The fifth year is then 602 B.C.E.

First Event 602 B.C.E. Fast of Tammuz 5 Per Zech. 8:19

In the midst of others (the others don’t see the vision), he is amazed and totally impressed by the glory of Jehovah, who comes on a throne with angels.  You can read the Bible to check out the vision. Everyone may see this according to Luke 21:27 (son of man actually coming with great power and glory).

Second Event 601 B.C.E.

He is brought in the spirit to the Temple in Jerusalem on Elul 5 in 601 B.C.E. the sixth year of captivity.  But, he is able to see what had happened (flashback).  Basically it is\was idolatry, sun worship, worship of Tammuz (weeping by women for him), and more.  So, Ezekiel is a witness of how Jehovah had relatively benign ones marked for saving, and then had sent in killers to kill the others.  Ezekiel 12:12-13 relates the blinding of Zedekiah and his fate.  It is a warning for fellow captives.  This appears to be only a report about what had happened, as there is nothing that could have been done to save the temple or the people.  Jeremiah clearly reports the temple was burned in the 19th year of Nebuchadnezzar.

Third Event

Later in  601  B.C.E., Ezekiel meets with others on Ab 10 (aka Tish B’Av).  The temple had been burned on Av 10 in 603 B.C.E, and Zedekiah had died.    Tish B’Av is a Jewish remembrance of the Temple burning.

Comments

At first I had thought that what Ezekiel saw was happening, but I believe now it was a flashback.  So, I thought it was the next year.  But, now, I see that Ezekiel was reporting on what had happened (without getting a report from anyone except Jehovah).  The substantial release of Jehoiachin after 37 years supports the 607 B.C.E. start of Babylonish captivity, because 607 –37 = 570 B.C.E., a Jubilee year (which is no doubt why Jehovah had it happen after 37 years).

I apologize for any mistakes (Per Psalm 19:12) which should be the caveat emptor of every chronology study.  However, if you find a mistake, “don’t go with the flow and let it go”.  You can tell me, but it may not matter and be futile anyway.    Thanks to all, and I hope to see you all in the Kingdom of God someday.  When I was a small child, I got the idea of training my cat (Herr Katze) and I kept pushing it down and giving it commands.  Not surprisingly, the cat ran away and never came back.  I am sure everyone being trained by Jehovah has felt that way, and many “have run away”.  The fleshly response of “weak flesh” is to flee.  But my family motto from ancient times is “Persevero.”  I guess we are “born fools”.

The 390 years of Ezekiel seems to start at the raising of resistors to King Solomon about 390 years from 607 B.C.E.  That would mean about 997 B.C.E., after Jehovah decided to rip away the Kingdom from Solomon   [logic 997-607=390].  390 could be analyzed as 7 Jubilees followed by war in 40 years.  It seems that Jehovah has repeatedly made wars occur after a temple dedication.  The temple dedication (1st temple) occurred in 1020 B.C.E., and 40 years later was the invasion of Sheshonq (as perhaps as agent for Osorkon).  That was (1020-40=980), end of reign of Rehoboam in 980 B.C.E.  After the 2nd temple dedication in 520 B.C.E., one finds the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C.E. in which Person power was contested.  Also, 29 C.E. was a Jubilee year and “temple dedication.”  40 years later was Titus bearing down on Masada in 69 B.C.E.  This seems to be a repeating event in the Bible.
