When Were Jacob and Joseph in Egypt?

by Murrell Selden   1/17/16  (scriptures in World English Bible)

In previous chronology studies the birth of Isaac  was found ,  and that Issac was born in 1920 B.C.E.  This information can be used to find out when Jacob was in Egypt.  Jacob was born when Isaac was 60 years old.  See Genesis 47 below.
If J is the year of Jacob's birth, then J=1920 minus 60, which is J=1860 B.C.E.

 Genesis 47:24 thru 26,
24 When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 The first came out red all over, like a hairy garment. They named him Esau. 26 After that, his brother came out, and his hand had hold on Esau’s heel. He was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

Lets go to Genesis 47:9 thru 10 (where Jacob  was in Egypt),
9 Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are one hundred thirty years. The days of the years of my life have been few and evil. They have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.”
Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from the presence of Pharaoh.

Let  L=  the year of Jacobs life, which is L= J minus 130=1860 minus 130=1730 B.C.E.

Continuing in Genesis  47:27 thru 31:
27 Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they got themselves possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly. 28 Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were one hundred forty-seven years. 29 The time came near that Israel must die, and he called his son Joseph, and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please don’t bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I sleep with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying place.” Joseph said, “I will do as you have said.” 31 Israel said, “Swear to me,” and he swore to him. Then Israel bowed himself on the bed’s head.
If D= year of Jacob's death, then D=L minus 17=1703 B.C.E.

How is the dream of Joseph at Genesis 37 fulfilled?
Genesis 45:4 thru 8,
They came near. He said, “I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 Now don’t be grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are yet five years, in which there will be no plowing and no harvest. 7 God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to save you alive by a great deliverance. 8 So now it wasn’t you who sent me here, but God, and he has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Notice here that all 11 brothers are together, and they bow down to Joseph, and this is after 1 year of having a child, 7 years of plenty, and 2 years of famine (with five years to go).  Joseph was at this point likely to be 40 years old.  See Genesis  41 below.

 Genesis 41: 46 thru 48,
Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. 47 In the seven plenteous years the earth produced abundantly. 48 He gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities. He stored food in each city from the fields around that city.

Jacob and family came in same year the 11 brothers were  in Egypt? When was Joseph Born? According to Genesis 45:17 thru 20, Pharaoh urged Joseph to hurry and bring his family to Goshen in Egypt. Wagons and supplies were provided.  Jacob was advised not to worry about belongings.  The trip may have taken place in a matter of weeks. They were not hungry when Jacob began to go to Egypt, because Israel and family had food sent from Joseph. It appears that Joseph was then 30+7+2+1=40 years old in the year Jacob stood before Pharaoh (7 years of plenty, 2 years of famine, and 1 year for birth of kids).  Since Jacob stood before Pharaoh in L=1730 B.C.E., Joseph must have been born 40 years earlier in  1770 B.C.E.  If Y= year of Joseph's birth, Y = L+40=1770 B.C.E.

Note that it may have been that he started in Nisan to make arrangements and have two children by year end (while ending the first year of plenty).  In that case, I could be in error by 1 year.   The book of Jubilees says that his birthday was Tammuz 1 (I think that was circumcison day, and his  birthday was Nisan 24).  So, in saying he was 30, he might have said "and almost 31."  The wheat harvest was still months away.  Caution, the Book of Jubilees has errors.

Final Comments:
These calculations can be confusing and difficult, and I have made mistakes before.  But should be very close, even correct.  Please forgive me for any errors!

Who was the Pharaoh who Joseph stood before in 1740 B.C. E.? Very likely one of the 13th Dynasty, perhaps  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merhotepre_Sobekhotep   For comments contact me at fuzz@fuzzdepot.com.

Joseph and his family were not really safe until the prophecy of seven years of famine were completed.  Why?  If just one year of plenty had come, Pharaoh might have believed that Josepth was merely lucky liar who did  not know anything.  After that, normal conditions ensued and they had a life in Egypt until Joseph died in 1650 B.C.E.  Of course, Jehovah could help whenever needed.
